How to use your sealing wax

Just a few points you should be aware of before you start wax stamping all those envelopes !
  1. Practice First ! do a few trial runs on scrap paper before you start.
  2. Get yourself organised ! It's better to have a partner to help you ~ but not essential.
  3. Light the taper (it helps to have a small candle or nightlight burning in case you need to re-light the wax), tilt the wax towards the surface to be sealed, allow a pool of melting wax to collect in one spot, when you have sufficient wax melted, stamp the wax with the seal, leave it there for a while as the wax cools, or the wax will stick to the seal, about 30 seconds. It is a good idea if your seal gets to hot to cool your seal first on ice - I take two cups of cold water, freeze them both, and keep swopping them to keep the seal cool, it works a treat. A hot brass coin will stick to the sealing wax.
  4. If you make a mess of it, you can just about peel the wax off again when it is cold, you will have to melt a bigger circle to cover the mistake - but all is not lost!
  5. If you are sealing invitations, make sure that the picture is facing away from the seal, as the wax may mark your invitation, do a test first - just in case.
  6. It is recommended that you protect your seal in an envelope when posting, mailable wax is more durable, but those Post Office machines will eat anything - you could send yourself a letter with a wax seal to see if it will survive. Some envelopes are better than others when it comes to the wax adhering to it.

Sometimes the wax will contain black flecks, this is caused by the burning of the wick, the only way to avoid this is to melt your wax in either a spoon or melting pot. If using a spoon, you will need to break the wax up first, place in the spoon and melt over a candle. Allow the wax to cool a little before pooring onto your envelope, this will give a better wax impression than if it is hot. You can wipe your spoon with kitchen paper while it is still warm.

The Melting pot we use for melting our sealing wax can be purchased from us in the UK, or if you are in the USA you can also get them over there with the correct voltage (UK voltage is not suitable for the USA) - see details below.

I hope this helps you a little, if you need any more advice and I can help, just drop me a line!

We are now stockists of The New 'Melt Art System' from the USA

The New Melting Pot designed in the USA by Suzi Weinberg, is an ideal way to melt your sealing wax, especially if you need to produce a larger quantity of seals - anything from 20 - 80 in one go. Use with a melting spoon to create a perfect seal on your project, unused wax can be re-melted for future use. The addition of the 'Project Pan Accessory' allows you to use your melting pot for many colours or materials.
The Melting Pot will safely melt sealing wax, hot glue sticks, candle wax, soap, chocolate, embossing enamel or any meltable craft material.
Place your sticks of wax into the melting pot (with or without the project pan), heat at 80 - 100 until the wax melts you can push it around a little with the spoon to help this along.
When the wax has melted, push the wick upto the pouring area, you can then fish this out with the spoon onto some kitchen paper and dispose of it. The wax will naturally go to the back of the pot, as it slops away from the pouring area. Leave the spoon in the wax, as the wax will cool when poured if the spoon is cold.

When your wax has melted, spoon a sufficient amount onto your envelope and seal with your wax stamp. Leave to set for approx 20-30 seconds otherwise wax may stick to the seal. You may need to cool the brass coin after a few uses, ice cubes are good for this.

When you have finished, you can clean your pan with a paper kitchen towel, this needs to be done while the pot is still warm. The spoon is also best cleaned while warm. Any wax left in the pan can be reused by leaving in the pan until next time you need to use it ~ OR if you leave the wax to go cold, it will just lift out of the pan in one piece, to be melted again at a later date.
